The Courteeners - Lose Control

So I wasn't going to write a post tonight... But then I remembered this track.

The Courteeners - Lose Control

This track has been out a few weeks now and I cant get enough of it. The sound is notably different to previous releases, and this has disappointed some, but for me it is the perfect progression for a band that has let their sound mature with them.

The single precedes the release of ANNA, the bands 3rd studio album, which is due February 4th 2013.

Some Nice Tracks...

Some great music to share at 1am.
Hope you have all had nice Holidays.

B L O O M : Schizophrenia

The promo video above is from Bloom, and was made by Nick Delap of Egyptian Hip Hop. The video follows the bands first ever show at Pop In, Paris, in November which was sold out.

'Schizophrenia' is a dark and ominous track set to a video which lends its self heavily to the occult. Perfect for the bands promo video, as the long drawn chords, chanting and sampled monologue, coupled together with a video that really doesn't give much away, really leaves you wanting more.

The band are due to put out their first release next year on Sways Records.

Bella Takes Chase

Bella Takes Chase is a singer/songwriter originally from Newcastle Australia, but now living and playing in England.

Miles Away is a great track that is receiving widespread critical acclaim and has been placed on the play lists of over 100 radio stations. Currently in the studio working on her new EP, Bella is looking to out the record out in February/March and looking to play as many festivals as possible in 2013.

Mothers Day

One of the best things about writing a music blog like this, is the people you get to talk to and the great music you get to listen to.

Mothers Day are a three piece band from Baltimore, made up of John Butler, Walter Rodgers and John Somers. The trio have been playing together since 2006, and the above track 'Shoulder Soldier' comes from their debut album "Tree House" which is due March 2013 and was mastered by Alex Somers in Iceland.

I love this track for so many reasons; the way it builds, the way it carries you through, the tone, the chords chosen, the choice to use the snare rap taping in and out, and the elusive ending of lovely drawn chords slowly fading out, but then giving the listener a snippet bit more they know you still want.

If 'Shoulder Soldier' is anything to go by, I personally can not wait to hear the rest of the album. Definitely a band to listen out for in 2013.

Nathan K.

Above is a link to 'Dishes' by Nathan K.

Recommended by a reader, 'Dishes' took me back to when I fist started writing this site and all I was listening to was musicians like Jeff Pianki, Joe Hertler and Caleb Groh. It is elegantly simple acoustic folk, stripped of complication and played in its purest form.

Recorded at a hospital in Michigan while keeping his dying Grandfather company, Dishes is a great tribute. My favourite tracks are the opening 'For your own good' and 'Criminal'.

You can listen online or name your own price and download the album.

Some really nice electronic music here.

Brolin

I'm currently in the process of sitting exams, but my head is out of the books for a moment to share some great music.

The tracks below come from a UK bedroom producer under the name of Brolin. Unfortunately that's about as much as I can tell you right now, because that's all anyone knows, or at least is letting known.

Definitely someone to listen out for in the new year.

Enter Shikari: Pack Of Theives

Enter Shikari have never been a band to keep things predictable, but it was still a nice surprise to listen to their latest single 'Pack Of Thieves' and hear the beautiful genre defying music they are so well known for producing.

A mix of Electro, pop punk, post hardcore and dub step (to generalise), 'Pack Of Thieves' is an anthem for the revolutionaries and a call for everyone to "stand up" to the "Antique Structure" and their "Whitewash and lies".

Not really moving with the times/genres, more sidestepping and moving around them, Enter Shikari prove yet again why they have been, and will continue to be around for many years.

Tom Odell - Another Love

Its been a while since something like this has caught my ear, but 'Another Love' by Tom Odell just pulled me in.

Tom Odell - Another Love

I don't know if its the piano introduction, the way the song builds or just the tragic story that they carry.
Whatever it its it works.

Band Of Horses: 19/11/12

"I force you to party with us... to some melencolly"

Band Of Horses take to the stage at the Manchester Academy on a cold and otherwise miserable Monday night, and genuinely seem grateful for the turn out. The turn out is down to years of hard work and four great albums; they have proved the test of time.

Opening the set with 'On My Way Back Home' the band work their way through their back catalogue, avoiding any kind of chronological order and try "to mix it up a bit and not play all the same songs". However, it was their most known songs such as 'Ode to LRC', 'Is there a ghost in my house' and 'No Ones Gonna Love You' that pleased the crowd the most.

For me my favourite of the night was when they performed 'The Funeral'. It was awesome in the truest sense of the word.

Hopefully they will be back again soon to grace us with their melancholy.

Are this enigmatic Manchester three piece going to be the next big thing? Perhaps.
Take a listen :)

Foals: Inhaler

Due to release their latest album 'Holy Fire' early next year, Foals have offered us 'Inhaler' as the first single. With is Rage style bass its hard not to move your head with this song, then as it slowly crescendos and explodes into the chorus you are ready to rock out like its 2004.

Surely this song will be a hit with both the rock/alt, indie and chart rock scenes and will hopefully help further cement Foals well earned career in music.

Monsta: Holdin' On

The remix is all over the radio at the moment, but I am in love with the Original.

That guys voice!!

Spitting Image: Freelance Whales (Little Daylight Remix)

Today I've had that need to find 'that track'. I don't know what that feeling is; much like an itch where you have to scratch away until it feels good, i can't stop searching the Internet until I find a track that fills 'that gap'.

Today's track is 'Spitting Image' from Freelance Whales, as remixed by Little Daylight.

Drenched in synth it is beautifully electropop, filled with enough melodies and hooks to satisfy even the most addicted synth junkie.

What tops it for me though is the way the vocals have been touched and worked (its always the vocals).

The remix comes from Little Daylight, who as many seem to be doing these days, has kept their identity a mystery to us.

The 1975: Sex

This one comes as recommended from my lovely girlfriend, its 'Sex' by The 1975's. Writing this I'm hoping I haven't completely misunderstood a hint... Hopefully not, I will continue writing the post and listening to this band anyway!

Sex  - The 1975

The sound is bigger than I expected, similar to 'Sweet Disposition'; It has all the elements of a song written to play out perfectly across stadiums filled with adolescents living out their YOLO years (forgive me) with heads and hearts full of untainted dreams. Now, whether or not the band will reach the stadiums their sound undoubtedly demands is yet to be seen. If not... its still a good song for the archives.

The History Of Apple Pie: Glitch

As in my previous post, apologies for the absence. I am however back online!

The first track Id like to share with you is 'Glitch' from The History Of Apple Pie.

The History Of Apple Pie - Glitch

The track is from their much awaited debut album 'Out Of View', which is due for release January 28th on Marshal Teller.

Death Cab For Cutie: The Barsuk Years Boxset

If I had the money I would buy this collection and the record player to enjoy them on. Unfortunately I don't, so will have to fill my shelf with something more affordable and stick to listening to the CD's.

However, if your are a DCFC fan with a little more cash to splash this is is a must have. Comprised of the listed albums below on 180-gram vinyl, the collection is in a cloth bound display box and is signed by each member of the band... But be quick my affluent friend as it is limited to 1500 sets only.

Apologies for the absence

I moved house. Yeaahhhh.
Didnt get the internet :(
In turn wasnt able to keep on top of this page as much as I would have liked to, but hopefully I should be getting the internet sorted soon and can continue as planned with more reviews, more interviews and more features.

Ive never really discussed the long term, but ideally Id like to expand with a seasonal publicaion, mixtape release's and futher down the line than that, host regular events to encourage new and innovative music and one day be able to invest in such a product and help it grow.

But thats in the future...
For now here is The Killers latest video release for 'Miss Atomic Bomb'

The Killers - Miss Atomic Bomb

I think its a great video for an amazing song, and its nice to see The Killers in a stripped back video that really captures how awesome their concerts really are.

Greenday - Let Yourself Go!

Check out this new release from Green Day called 'Let Yourself Go'.

For people who have followed Greenday over the decades, this track will bring back some nostalgic feelings. Its still very much the Greenday of today with the level of production and hint of theatricality (random solo), but the instant feel you get from the simple chord sequence, fast bass and drums; you cant help but think of the early 2000's.

Labrinth - Treatment

Before you judge; listen.

Labrinth - Treatment

Labrinth is not normally the type of artist i would usually post about seeing as he is mainly pop/rap/notsureofhisgenreactually. But wow... listen to that opening. It sounds like it could be right off a white lies album, and the vocals in the opening, they're quite good right up until it becomes another chart song. If the chorus was half as good as that opening synth riff, then this would be one dangerously good song.

Does anyone out there fancy doing some sampling and make something epic with that opening?
Please.

Ellie Goulding - Anything Could Happen

Wow.

I was driving home from work the yesterday and 'Anything Could Happen' came on the radio. Instantly i knew, I got that feeling that this was something good and I needed to pay attention, turn it up and enjoy.

It is beautifully simple. A combination of a pulsing synth bass, sweeping synthscapes and catchy hooks and melodies, all culminating at in the chorus to make something perfect.

If youre a fan of Oh Land, IAMWHOAMI, paloma faith (for the vocals) then check this track out.

Maximo Park: New Album and Tour

After a 3 year hiatus, Maximo Park have returned with a fantastic new album 'The National Health' and are following it with a tour of North America.

Amongst a sea of bands, all trying to do something different and unheard of, 'The National Health' is refreshingly familiar. Maximo Park have taken their talent of producing contagiously catchy indie rock and made great tracks such as 'Hips and Lips' 'Undercurrents' 'Waves of Fear' and 'This Is What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted'.

Hopefully this album means Maximo Park will stick around for a while; I think it would be a shame if we had to wait another 3 years to hear more of their music.

If any stateside readers would like to see Maximo Park live, you can catch them at the following dates and venues.

9-10: Middle East Downstairs – Boston, MA
9-12: World Caf̩ Live Downstairs РPhiladelphia, PA
9-13: Webster Hall – New York, NY
9-15: U Street Music Hall – Washington, DC
9-17 Lincoln Hall – Chicago, IL
9-20 Slim’s – San Francisco, CA

Purity Ring - Fineshrine

This duo never cease to amaze me and from the 'on repeat' buzz that follows with each development, everyone else for that matter.

Below is their latest release in the build up to the album 'Shrines'. It is a similar sound to other tracks we've heard, but still different in its own right. Anyone who says every track sounds the same is wrong; Purity Ring have found a niche and made themselves very well acquainted with it, utilising their discovered capability to make new and beautiful music, whilst pioneering the way for others.

The Killers: Battle Born Teaser

Above is the preview/teaser trailer to The Killers new album 'Battle Born' which is set to be released this autumn (Fall for anyone stateside).

The trailer does not give away much, but instead keeps you guessing. Is this an album intro, ready to burst into 'Hot Fuss' era indie rock and roll as I've been informed? Or will we be presented with a synth saturated electropop style album later this year? Either would be well received I'm sure.

Hopefully I will be treated to some of the new material when I see them in August at V Festival.

This is cool.

Cry Wolf - Killin' It (Krewella Cover)

It is a cover of 'Krewella - Killin it' and it could not be further from the original, but stripped down to basics it works so well.

Sun Glitters

Thankfully, albeit late at night, there are radio stations out there playing innovative, exciting, game changing music.

Tonight I tuned in and for the first time heard 'Sun Glitters', the exact track I'm not sure, but here are a few I have listened too since coming home. My favourite by far is the track below, its just awesome.

Sun Glitters - The Wind Caresses Her Hair

Sun Glitters - Too Much To Lose

Sun Glitters - Softly and Slowly

Beatmatic - Beats Of Skyrim

Proud to post another local artist on here. This time it is Beatmatic, a guy I spent some good years of high school with and who has clearly gone on to make some cool music.

'Beats of Skyrim' is an album compiled using samples from the soundtrack of the increasingly popular Skyrim.

Here's a little interview with Beatmatic. Open up the link below and have a listen while you read, you wont be disappointed.
http://beatmatic.bandcamp.com/

What brought you to make this album and what were your influences?

"Last year when Skyrim came out, I immediately got hooked to it , it's a very addictive game if you have played it! One of the things that finishes off the atmosphere is the epic soundtrack, so I did some research and found out who Jeremy Soule(the guy who made the soundtrack) is and then I bought the soundtrack and it was even better than I expected. I thought, why not make an album with all these amazing tracks. I sample but try to do it in a way that removes it from the original to create something completely different. I achieve the results through playing with pitch and effects to make the sound unrecognisable. I  then chop it up and play it in a way as to make new rhythms. Once that is done its a matter of putting it all together to make trippy, chilled electronic hip-hop."

Who inspires you?

I take inspirtaion from all types of music, but the biggest ones are Flying Lotus(for experimenting with sounds that shouldn't really fit), Tool(they make crazy trippy prog-rock), 9th Wonder(for the sampling) and Orrest(a personal friend and an inspiring music artist who gave me a lot of inspiration).

Where do you want your music to take you / your music to take you?

In future I would like to perform a visual/audio nights in Manchester. I don't want to sign to a label as I love my artistic freedom and I don't ever want to get famous, I just want my music to represent me not me trying to represent my music and hopefully one day I can perform to a ton of people; that would be awesome.

Thanks to Beatmatic for the interview.

Be sure to check out this album. It has something for everyone, my personal favourite is the bass pounding 'The Fallen'. Its short but so so sweet! Another favourite of mine is opening track 'Unbound', it is impossible not to get caught in the sway of the beat.

For a download of 'Beats of Skyrim' check out the link below.

Also, if you would like more information on Beatmatic or would like me to put you in touch, head over to the contact section and let me know.

Clams Casino - Im God

This is this weeks track for me to obsess over and play on repeat.

Clams Casino - I'm God

It slowly eases you in and then drops. From that moment you don't look back, and just flow.

As the song says "Its what happens, When... Take... Deep... Breaths..."
Perfectly fitting.

James Drake - New Release

Earlier this year I wrote about James Drake, a childhood friend, who is currently pursuing a solo music career.

This is his latest release, acoustic love song 'Stormy Weather'.

James Drake - Stormy Weather

James is currently working on building a fan base though giging and self promotion. So if you like this, show a friend, or if you are interested in booking James or would like some more information drop me an email (see contact) and I will put you in touch.

Tuesday 1 May 2012

Had a browse and came across an awesome musician under the alias of 'Ponchos'.
I cant find out much about the guy, except he lives in Boston.

His music is pure escapism, pulling you into electronic soundscapes beyond imagination. All you have to do its put on you headphones, close your eyes and you're gone. Favourites of mine so far are 'Chatter' and 'The Heart'; both offer something completely different. Chatter feels like its a bonus track from a lost Bloc Party album, perfectly melodic with all the right synth overtones and warmth. The Heart on the other hand is dark. Dissonant strings make way for ghostly vocals and a reverberating piano; its stunning.

I am currently working my way though the rest of his videos as I write this and the strangest thing is some of them have no more than 6 hits!?!

Here are a couple for you to check out. Hope you like them.

Cant wait.

Block Party: UK Tour

Last year it seemed we had lost Bloc Party forever, but it all turned out to be some kind of joke that was misunderstood. Either way Bloc Party are back and are currently working on a fourth album in New York with their new label Frenchkiss Records and today have announced a tour.

From the size of the venues it seems the tour is a warm up for the band, a chance to get back to playing live together. No doubt it is also a chance to showcase new material and give us a glimpse of what is to come. I think I'm going to have to get tickets.

Band Of Skulls: Sweet Sour

Tonight I was sat in my car waiting for Ellé and for the first time heard 'Sweet Sour' by these guys.

Band Of Skulls - Sweet Sour

Band of Skulls are a trio hailing from Southampton, in the UK believe it or not. Some reviewers out there have accused them of riding on the wave of blues/rock that a re-emerged with bands such as The Black Keys, but why not. I think their garage rock / blues sound is genuine and deserving of its air play in its own right.

Saturday 7 April 2012

Comback or Cash In?

Over the past few years there has been a tidal wave of 'split' bands 'meanding bonds' and realising 'its all about the music'. But how true is this?

Somehow, every time a band reforms I just cant help but think it is for one last fat paycheck, their pension pot secured. I guess we will never know, not unless a band comes along and is brutally honest!

Just was thinking. Thats all.

Thursday 5 April 2012

You Me At Six: The Swarm

I saw the thorpe park advert the other night and was logging on youtibe minutes later to hear this song in full.

Its the chorus that gets you, the little drop before it, a quick inhale and then slow it right down for a rhythm you cant help but move your head to. Its awesome.

Alphabeat: Vacation

Alphabeat were once a guilty pleasure of mine, and then my Fiancee bought me tickets to see them live and I was blown away by the talent of this group. There is no guilt involved now.

Vacation is the bands latest release, it is immediately 80's in style which works beautifully with Stines voice, and ridiculously catchy. No doubt this track will be lapped up by tourist reps and Butlins alike, but I will still listen!

Monday 19 March 2012

GROUPLOVE

Grouplove are cool. Their music is grunge like Cage The Elephant, but on a far more mellow level, easy to get into with each song as good as the last.

Already doing well across the Americas I can't see it being long until their success crosses the Atlantic. Fingers crossed anyway.

Here are some tracks you should check out:

Trust - Candy Walls

Heard these two songs while browsing the internet and couldnt not post them.
